I remember nothing about being born in Washington, DC, in 1948. I grew up near the badlands of North Dakota and to this day feel most comfortable in wide open spaces. Travels in Latin America and the Pacific awakened a sense of color; four years spent on San Andres Island, Colombia, influenced my way of looking at life. Now I take much inspiration from hiking in New Mexico, where I have lived for 26 years. My husband, dog, and I travel by motor home to Canada in the summer and Mexico in the winter.
ART EDUCATION:
BATIK -
I began batiking in 1973 when I took a workshop at the Denver Free University. After living on an island in the Caribbean during the '70's, I moved to California and tried to find advanced instruction in batik. What I was searching for was in Indonesia so I sailed there, with many interesting stops along the way. In 1981 I studied with batik master Bambang Oetoro near Jogakarta on the island of Java. There I learned techniques that I still use today.
OIL PAINTING -
At a young age (about nine) I began painting in oils. After attending Northwestern University in journalism with art and sociology minors ('66-'69), I did not paint for many years. Instead, I created jewelry and made steady progress with my batiks. In 1998 I picked up brushes again and became very interested in plein air painting. Since then I have taken workshops with Brian O'Connor, Robert Grogan, Kenn Backhaus, Ralph Oberg, Leo Neufeld, Morgan Samuel Price, and Camille Przewodek.
SILVERSMITHING & ENAMELING -
While living in California in 1978 and 1979 I took adult education classes in jewelry-making at various Bay Area schools.
