BATIK LANDSCAPES
View
this Collection . . .
Batik has interested me since I began working in the medium more than thirty years ago. I take it as a challenge to use the standard elements of composition, design, values, and dimension using a non-traditional artform. These pieces are created by dyeing cotton fabric; wax is used as a resist during the process and then removed. Though I use the techniques I learned in Indonesia, my images are impressionistic landscapes of the western world.

OIL PAINTINGS
View
this Collection . . .
Because Ken and I travel much of the time, painting en plein air is a perfect way for me to create art away from the studio. I am always trying to create larger paintings outdoors; since I prefer locations only reached by hiking this can be a challenge. My largest pieces are done in the studio, using field studies to remind me of what it looked like before the wind came up or the sun went down.

MEXICO - Plein Air Oils
View
this Collection . . .
During the winter months we usually travel to Mexico; we have visited 28 of the 31 Mexican states in our motor home. The winter of 2008-2009 was probably our best trip to Mexico. Amidst the lively culture of Mexico, I was able to find a few quiet places to set up my easel. The paintings near the end of this display are from two years ago when we spent time by the Sea of Cortez.

NORTHWEST & CANADA - Plein Air Oils
View
this Collection . . .
These paintings were done on location during our summer 2009 trip. We spent five weeks getting to Canada, through the Northwest. Then we explored Vancouver Island, the Sunshine Coast, and the lower mainland of British Columbia in our motor home. (Paintings closer to the bottom of this page are from our 2007 trip.)
