BATIK LANDSCAPES

Batik has interested me since I began working in the medium more than thirty years ago.  I take it as a challenge to use the standard elements of composition, design, values, and dimension using a non-traditional artform.  These pieces are created by dyeing cotton fabric; wax is used as a resist during the process and then removed. Though I use the techniques I learned in Indonesia, my images are impressionistic landscapes of the western world.

Because Ken and I travel much of the time, painting en plein air is a perfect way for me to create art away from the studio.  I am always trying to create larger paintings outdoors; since I prefer locations only reached by hiking this can be a challenge.  My largest pieces are done in the studio, using field studies to remind me of what it looked like before the wind came up or the sun went down.

CANADA - Plein Air Oils

We spent the summer of 2007 in Alberta and British Columbia; we very much enjoyed the beautiful Canadian west.  All these paintings were done on site, en plein air.  In total we saw 6 whales, 5 bears, and 2 wolves (in Yellowstone).  They were all too fast to paint!

MEXICO - Plein Air Oils

During the winter months we usually travel to Mexico; we have visited 26 of the 31 Mexican states in our motor home.   Usually we are too busy exploring for me to set up an easel, but we have spent extended time in recent years in the area around San Carlos, Sonora, where I painted most of these small oils.  The Sea of Cortez on the west coast of the mainland reminds me of the Caribbean and I have really enjoyed the quiet hours spent painting the clear water.

Pinte la mayoria de estes cuadros cerca de San Carlos, en el estado de Sonora.  El agua clara del Mar de Cortes me encanta y me fascina pintar junto al mar.  He pasado muchas horas felices pintando alli en tranquilidad.
